Foreshortening definitely,the figures occupy the same space as the viewer and reach out to us,and most importantly the dramatic lighting technique he employs to add a theatrical sense of drama to the images.
Tenebrism sounds familiar. Caravaggio’s paintings are very dark and Tenebra in Italian mean darkness.
